First Holy Communion is a sacred and joyful milestone in the life of a Catholic child. It is the moment when a child receives the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist for the first time, entering more fully into the sacramental life of the Church.
At St. Joseph Catholic Church, children typically prepare for First Holy Communion in 2nd grade or above.
To ensure that each child is spiritually and catechetically ready, the following faith formation requirements apply:
- If a child has completed one full year of prior faith formation (through parish religious education or Catholic school), they may begin sacramental preparation in the following year.
- If a child has no prior formal faith formation, they must complete two full, consecutive years of religious education before receiving the sacrament.
Preparation Includes:
- Religious education classes
- Preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (to be received before First Communion)
- Mass attendance and active parish participation
- Parent involvement through meetings and take-home materials
- Retreats or special liturgical events
Registration Details:
- Registration opens in July each year
- A copy of the child’s baptismal certificate and birth certificate is required at the time of registration
For more information, please contact the Parish Office.
We are blessed to accompany your family as your child takes this important step in their journey of faith.
